Auditing Payroll 101 by Robert Swingler
About our Class:
Auditing Payroll 101 – Class Summary Join us for an in-depth, practical discussion on how to effectively audit payroll. This session is designed for payroll managers, supervisors, and payroll professionals who are responsible for reviewing payroll work and ensuring accuracy, compliance, and audit readiness. We will cover the foundational principles of payroll auditing, focusing on what payroll leaders need to know to ensure their payroll teams meet both internal standards and typical audit expectations. As U.S. President Ronald Reagan famously said, “Trust but verify”—a philosophy that applies perfectly to payroll oversight. Whether your payroll function is being reviewed by:
· Finance or Accounting teams
· Internal audit
· External auditors this class will walk through what auditors typically expect from payroll and how to prepare for those reviews with confidence. Participants will review the entire payroll cycle with a critical eye, using audit checklists to identify key risk areas, validate controls, and spot common errors. We will discuss how to customize audit checklists to align with your specific payroll vendor/system and organizational processes. The session includes realistic practice scenarios to reinforce concepts and provide hands-on experience applying audit techniques in everyday payroll situations. Additional Focus: As part of payroll reconciliations, we will also demonstrate practical Excel tips and tricks to make reconciling payroll data easier, faster, and more accurate—especially when working with large reports and audit documentation.
